What is Digital Signage?
Digital signage is a system of digital presentation devices in public accessible spaces. It's purpose is mostly presentation of informational, navigational information and mainly digitaly managed commercial.
The main benefits of digital signage devices over static information and advertising devices are:
- the possibility of instantly changing the image information without interfering with the device (with conventional media, for example, it is necessary to replace the poster or upload other content to the USB)
- displaying more information or advertising spots on one medium
- broadcasting dynamic spots, partitions and interlacing effects
- backlighting of the image information, which for example with outdoor LED screens is more eye-catching than conventional (non-illuminated during the day) surfaces
A typical example of Digital Signage devices are promotional screens in shops. Another commonly used model is a commercial network of advertising screens offering airtime sales (similar to TV broadcasting). There are several models for communicating with device observers. This can be the repeated broadcasting of advertising spots in a loop, as well as the application of additional information within the advertising broadcast (e.g. information on weather, current time, traffic situation, cultural service, etc.). The model of interspersing longer programmes with commercials is used where it can be guaranteed that the viewer has enough time to watch the programme (typically waiting rooms and rest rooms).
Another model may be the use of screens for digital presentation of content in an interactive way, both in the form of touchscreen kiosks, interactive screens for frontal teaching or smart screens with wireless transmission in meeting and boardrooms.
